Hello, Fellow VHF'ers-

I was hoping to make an announcement about this myself, but W0WOI beat me to
it! :)

The Fred Fish Memorial Award is the result of MANY hours of hard work and
research by several dedicated 6 meter operators. The primary gentlemen
involved were Bill Van Alstyne, W5WVO; Kevin Kaufhold, W9GKA; and Paul Kiesel,
K7CW. An email list started by W5WVO brought a few other likeminded VHF'ers on
board. As an avid 6 meter operator myself, these efforts to honor one of the
top 6 meter operators of our time quickly got my attention, as well as the
attention of several members of the ARRL staff and board.

A brief rundown of the award is:

1) This is a lifetime achievement award. You must have all 488 grids confirmed
on 6 meters to qualify. There are no endorsements by mode and no recognition
of "stepping stones;" you either have all 488 grids confirmed on 6 meters or
you do not.

2) The Fred Fish Memorial Award rules strictly adhere to the VUCC rules. Of
particular importance is VUCC Rule 6, which states: "...all contacts must be
made from locations no more than 200 km apart."

We hope this will stimulate the activation of rare grid squares in the 48
contiguous United States, both through portable operations and by getting
grid's native amateur population interested in operating 6 meters. We also
hope the Fred Fish Memorial Award will help promote 6 meter activity
throughout the continent and the world.

As the Resolution just passed the Board, we are still working on posting
complete information on this new award at arrl.org. Please be patient while we
assemble the data. An announcement will be made to the VHF+ community when the
information is complete.

I hope you will join us in our desire to honor Fred Fish and to follow in his
footsteps in a very unique achievement in Amateur Radio.

Best 73,
