Larry,

I think that power on/off switch failure is not unusual with ICOM 
multimode rigs.  I don't recall the physical switch configuraiion on 
the 551 that I had, but on the later ICOM VHF/UHF rigs I've 
experienced switch failures.  Fortunately I been able to replace them 
by hook or crook, HI.

I would recommend that you go inside and jumper across the opened 
circuit on the switch, and operate the turn on function 
externally.  I turn mine on via the wall switch that turns on the AC 
to all of my normally operating equipment.  This tends to extend the 
life of these high use, vunerable switches, that are on most of the 
transceivers.  It also acts as an overall safety feaature.
