About a year ago there was an article in QST saying that over 50% of
US ham license holders have never been on the air! When we do get
someone new, we need to Elmer them and make sure they get on the air and
even better, with more than at HT.
We have a significant influx of new licenses in the local area
that have come in thru their search and rescue work. Unfortunately we
haven't had much luck getting them involved with club activities like
Field Day or coming to meetings. To be involved in S&R you need to take
some online courses and do a background check. The people running S&R
ham communications don't want to hear Q signals used in ham
communications so it is creating quite a rift in the ham community. If
you haven't been thru the required courses and done the security check,
you will not be permitted to help in emergency communications even
though you show up ready, able and willing to help, you will be turned
away like has happened at some of the California fires. Many old time
experienced hams that are a good asset, are staying away from this in
droves.
